Ambleside Country House

The Garden Route is the name given to the coastal strip between the Outeniqua  Mountains and the sea at the south end of South Africa. Due to regular but moderate rainfall, the area is green and a magnificent natural garden area with deep river gorges, many lakes, and the best beaches anywhere.

Temperatures - are mainly warm, 20 to 30°C - seldom colder than 15°C even in Winter. Nights at Ambleside in George are mild in Winter, seldom colder than 8°C or too hot at night. Clothing should be mostly light and casual. No need for Arctic clothing here. All Restaurants are smart-casual, no ties required. Jerseys and rain-gear should be included. Good strong footwear a must.

Currency - is the SA Rand worth about (21st January 2010) R8 for $US 1 dollar, R13 for 1 pound; and R11 per euro. Petrol R9.80 per litre and car hire about R350 per day. Beer and food are cheap (Don't even ask...)

Driving - We drive on the left, as in England. Distances are in Kilometres.

Roads - are mostly tarred and in very good condition. Where dirt or gravel is listed, roads are usually very good.

Doctors - South Africa has excellent medical facilities, and modestly priced - but take travel medical insurance if available. The country is modern and well developed in this region with all emergency services.

Language  - English is spoken everywhere, German is common at tourist venues on south coast. What ever you choose to do, on your holiday to the Garden Route, it will be a rewarding and memorable experience, so make your plans and set the dates.

“Remember, Ambleside Country House is the ideal B&B (bed and Breakfast) and Guest House on the Garden Route of South Africa, when you need accommodation, golf tours, great golf courses, whale watching, or great eco experiences like shark cage diving or ostrich riding, or caving in the Cango Caves...”
